Hurricane Katrina: Hurricane Betsy: Hit in 1985, and broke the Levi’s for the first time. o The federal government put in money to rebuild the levi’s stronger, In 2001- 2005 funding continued to be cut (both Parties). The project was only 75% done… Because of lack of funding. Had the project finished, the situation may have been different. Hurricane Katrina: Hurricane near the mouth of the Mississippi broke the levies and fell into New Orleans. Most of the city, including the black 9 th ward, was underwater. o New Orleans is shaped like a tea-cup, and so it filled up, and couldn’t drain. o Only 76 people died. o Mostly Water Damage, even though wind was at 100mph o On top of floods, there was also rain (10-15 inches of rain) o 18-28 Feet in Louisiana and Mississippi o 217 sq Miles of Land has converted into land Levys o 15-18 ft concrete walls were destroyed o They were build with pumps to drain water o They protect the city from River and Lake Flooding o Used as transportation (Levy Roads)
