Colonies Modernize after WWII: It is theorized that when Europe modernizes more and more, that the colonies suffer  more and more. Increasing gap in modernization A few get rich, but most of the world gets poor o Based on Marxist Labor of Value Because Labor is the only thing of value When a person gets rich, it is because someone’s labor value is  going up/down o Value of colony labor is changing The best thing to do is to cut ties between the suzerain state and the new state.  o Get laborers from other countries Burma gets workers (middle class/mercantile class) from India/China Becomes Isolationist (we can keep riches for ourselves) Cuts off from  Modern trading system Theory fails, because no manufactured goods.  Another Theory of Modern Rejectionism (Soviet Union, and Soviet Bloc) o Soviets had to industrialize, otherwise risked being taken over. Use auto-exploitation (required its workers to suppress its standard living  at the expense of workers, and keeping industry going) Had the money, power and technology to fight off Germany Central planning (5 year plans) decides which industries grow and which  shrink. All productive resources of society are linked together, and used
