Lecture 15 Notes: Problems with Globalization??? A. One of the Arguments against globalization is that it is increasing the income gap between nations. Poor Nations are getting poorer, and rich countries are getting richer, a. Samuel Stolper Theory: We are still using the same technology, tools, and factories. b. Rapid Innovations : Occurs in large countries, and replaces old jobs with new ones. This increases with globalization due to Outsourcing, increasing access to other country’s technology. Just because women no longer work as telephone operators, doesn’t mean they don’t work anymore. There are newly created jobs. i. Thailand in the 1990’s. Increasing competition from China and India. Thailand needs to restructure. 1. Does not have enough time , Thailand needs to create a secondary education system, and restructure sectors of its economies. 2. Capital in Thailand is Mobil, but Labor is not , In other words, parts of Thailand, (ports near cities) developed and other parts did not. B. Kapstein suggests 3 things to undermine Globalization:
