Lecture 19: The Westphalian Era 1518-1648: 30 Years war essentially regarding Religion. However, by the end of the war, protestant states and catholic states were aligning against Germany. The resolution was that whatever the religion the King was, would be the “official” religion of the country. This greatly affected alliances (created the holy trinity later). All that is left is each Kingdom, and within in each Kingdom: King had sole power to tax Sole power to use armies Sole Law Givers This led to absolutism at home, but there was VERY limited international law. NO one was there to judge the action of the king. 1648-1918: First Wave of Globalization. Countries are starting to expand their influence beyond their homeland. (Colonization) WWI: A Major cause was the political order of Europe at the time. Wilson’s Plan: No annexation at the end of the war, and no indemnities (Cash payments) from the losers to the winners.
