Write Your Own Exam Questions Handout Writing your own exam question is easier said than done, especially when you are trying to write in multiple-choice format. Below I have offered an example of a good and a no-so-good exam question. Good exam questions ask you to critically think about the topic in question, pulling not only from your memory of readings or lectures but also challenging you to analyze your understanding of this topic. In other words, a good exam question will go beyond memorization of “facts.” In order to get an extra credit point for a question your question must not need any significant re-wording or phrasing. It also must be substantially different from that of any other question handed in by other students, or recommended in course text materials. If you see a question on a test that you believe you wrote, but may not have gotten credit for, please see me. The reasons for this may be as follows: (1) it needed significant rewording, (2) another student wrote a very similar question, (3)
