Chapter 3- Greek 1. How did the Greeks Eventually Fall? a. The Final Act i. The period of turbulent politics and war despite the achievements in literature, architecture, oratory and historical writing ii. Strive for “Common Peace” and “Fereralism” b. Struggle for Hegemony i. Sparta, Athens, and Thebes tried to create a Hegemony 1. Political ascendancy over the other states ii. Didn’t work because each major power wanted to be in charge iii. Sparta at War with Persia again (because didn’t give promised land) 1. Stalemate –first formal common peace a. Spartan king went against it and tried to attack places that didn’t defend against Sparta b. Attacked Thebes i. Thebes won and eliminated Sparta as major power c. Phillip of Macedonia i. King of Macedonia ii. Saw Athens as a threat to Macedonia 1. Pushed Athenians out of NW Agean 2. Army intimidated Athens and Sparta iii. Thebes and Athens became allies 1. Fought Phillip and lost a. Phillip=commander of Greece iv. End of classical Greek freedom 1. Because Greeks couldn’t get along, they fell to an invader v. Phillip united them with the common peace Chapter 4- Hellenistic Diffusion 1. What did the spread of Hellenism mean to the Greeks and the people of the Near East? a. Alexander the Great i. Spread Hellenism to India ii. Defeated Persia and went to India waged unnecessary war b. Alexander’s Legacy i. Debatable-philosopher or bloody autocrat ii. Founded new cities and colonies all throughout east c. Political Legacy i. Empire left up to 3 officers who split up land ii. Political fragmentation
