Introduction: The objective of this experiment is to determine the dependence of the temperature on the EMF and to determine some thermodynamics properties such as ؤ G, ؤ S and ؤ H. Also the equilibrium constant will be determined. In general: Electrical work (J) = charge (C) * voltage (V) Also: ؤ G = - nFE Where n is moles of electrons, F is Faraday constant, and E is the voltage. Also we know that ؤ G depends on the activities of the reactants and the products. ؤ G = ؤ Go + RT lnQ (Q is the activity quotient ) From the above relations we got: E = Eo – (RT/nF) lnQ To determine the entropy the voltage of the cell is measured several times at different temperatures: ( δ E/ δ T) P = -1/nF (( δ G/ δ F) P – (1/nF) ؤ S ؤ S = nF ( δ E/ δ T) p Also the enthalpy can be determined as follows: ؤ H = ؤ G + T ؤ S ؤ H = -nF [ E – T( δ E/ δ T) P ] There will be two parts in this experiment: Part 1 : We have a cell: Cd (s) | Cd+² SO4-² (aq,c) | Cd (Hg,X2) After passing 2 Faradays of positive electricity through the cell: At the anode: Cd(s) = Cd+² (aq,c) + 2e At the cathode: 2e + Cd+²(aq,c) = Cd(Hg,X2)
