Canton System mid 1700’s until the mid 1800’s Europeans could only trade with China in Canton (Guangzhou) China place foreign merchants under many different restrictions o Could only trade with China through Canton o Confined to a small area outside city, only live in that area during the 6 month trading season, no wives or families were permitted at the training posts Could only trade with the Cohong merchants (guild or Chinese merchants) authorized by Chinese state to trade with foreigners o Approximately 13 merchants Banned from firearms and subject to Chinese law Foreign ships had to pay fees levied on them Europeans Trading in Canton: English East India Company (EIC) Other British 2 Problems for Europeans: limited access to China and restrictions
