A set of chips that provides the interfaces between all of the PC's subsystems. It provides the buses and electronics to allow the CPU, memory and input/output devices to interact. PC chipsets, which are housed on one to four chips, include built-in controllers for almost all common peripherals.

3 Chipsets All circuitry is considered to be part of the chipset . A chipset or "PCIset" is a group of microcircuits that orchestrate the flow of data to and from key components of a PC. This includes the CPU, main memory, secondary cache and any devices situated on the ISA and PCI buses. The chipset also controls data flow to and from hard disks, and other devices connected to the IDE channels The chipsets performance improvements will only be realized when used in conjunction with BIOSes capable of taking full advantage of the new technologies . Processor Bus Memory controllers Bus controllers I/O controllers System timers Interrupts DMA controllers RTC/NVRAM etc.

4 Chipsets A chipset is a group of integrated circuits, or chips, that are designed to work together, and are usually marketed as a single product It is designed to work with a specific family of microprocessors. It controls communications between the processor and external devices. It plays a crucial role in determining system performance. It refers to a specific set of chips : the northbridge and the southbridge . The northbridge links the CPU to very high-speed devices, especially main memory and graphics controllers. The southbridge connects to lower-speed peripheral buses (such as PCI or ISA). In the latest chipsets, the southbridge contains some on-chip integrated peripherals, such as Ethernet, USB, and audio devices.
