Preventive Maintenance Procedures (1) frequency considerations Environmental. A dirty environment: A machine shop floor or a gas station service area or similar conditions might require you to clean your system every three months or less. A normal office environments: Cleaning a system every six months to a year is usually fine. Shorten this time interval when you find dust bunnies inside. E.g. Pets The quality of a system also determines the frequency of preventive maintenance procedures. Other preventive maintenance procedures . Making periodic backups of your data and critical areas, such as boot sectors, file allocation tables (FATs), and directory structures on the disk. Defragment hard disks at least once a month to maintain disk efficiency and speed. A weekly checklist might look something like this: ■ Back up any data or important files. ■ Delete all temporary files, such as *.tmp (files with a .tmp extension) *.* (files beginning with a tilde (~)) *.chk (files with a .chk extension)

Preventive Maintenance Procedures (2) To be considered frequently REMOVE Web browser history and temporary Internet files Empty the Recycle Bin. Check / install antivirus software updates. You might configure your antivirus software program to check for automatic updates on a high sped Internet connection. Defrag you disk’s Create an operating system startup disk. Check / install updated drivers for all installed devices. Check / install any operating system updates. Clean the system, including the monitor screen, keyboard, CD/DVD drives, floppy drive, mouse, and so on. Check that all fans on your system are operating properly, including the CPU heatsink, power supply, and any chassis fans. Use the system BIOS readout of fan speeds for this check.
