The Arab world is often heavily criticized by Western nations regarding the treatment of women. The article “Islam, Culture, and Women” brings up the point that many of the issues that Western nations oppose are actually not a part of Islam at all. Instead, it is a part of the Arab culture itself and how it has chosen to interpret Islam. Western nations may be critical of the fact that Muslim women continue to maintain their faith after leaving a country of oppression, but Muslim women understand that many of the restrictions placed on them are not due to the laws of Islam, but rather the laws of the country they were born into. Polygamy is one of the most controversial issues of Islam. Many Western countries take the opinion that polygamy is a way of controlling women and giving a man the option to move on when he is tired of his first wife. In fact, Islam teaches people that a man can only have more than one wife if he is able to treat them all equally. This practice first began when women were often left widowed without a means of support. The Prophet Muhammad would marry these women to provide them with support, despite the fact that many were old with children of their
