1REL 1004                       STUDY GUIDE FOR FIRST TEST Canon 1. Know the formal definition of the “canon” of the Bible, according to the class lecture. 2. Review the Jewish canon of the Bible.  How many books are in it? Be able to list the three main  sections in their proper sequential order. 3. Know that the rabbis in Palestine fixed the Jewish canon ca. 100 CE.  What principles possibly  governed their selection of books? 4. How does the Catholic “Old Testament” differ from the Jewish canon?  What are the Deutero- canonical books?  (You need not be able to list them, but you ought to know generally what they  are.)  What are the four major sections of the Catholic Old Testament? What principles underlie  the organization of this canon? 5. How does the Protestant Old Testament compare with the Jewish canon and the Catholic Old  Testament?  In what way is it a hybrid? Geography and History 1. Explain how, according to the class lecture, Israel’s location on the land bridge between Egypt and  Mesopotamia shaped Israelite political history (1-2 sentences).  Explain how the nation’s location  influenced its culture (1-2 sentences). 2. According to the class lecture, the Israelites were “late comers” in the ancient Near East.  Briefly  explain this statement (2-4 sentences). 3.    Review Grabbe’s description of naive and critical histories of ancient Israel.   How do the            two differ in their approaches to the Bible (i.e., in their evaluations of the Bible as a  historical source). Introduction to the Pentateuch/Torah 1. Who wrote the Pentateuch?  Know the traditional answer (before 1600 CE) and the answer given  by biblical critics during the 1600s. 2.
