The course's specific aims are to teach you how to interpret historical and cultural materials and articulate your own point of view. GenEd U.S. Society courses are geared to enhance the following: critical thinking skills information literacy students’ ability to examine historical events through a variety of interdisciplinary disciplines students’ understanding of historical and contemporary issues in context student engagement, both locally and globally, in the issues of our day Focus of Urban Education 0854 The City. We are in the midst of vast global change. How does it impact cities like Philadelphia and the people who live here? In this course we focus mainly on education, but this doesn't mean we look only at schools. We look at different places in Philadelphia where education happens, such as organizations doing advocacy or public education campaigns and teaching different groups what they need and want to know. We also look at what the city itself can teach us, if we learn how to look. Globalization. The world is becoming increasingly interconnected, through economics, information technology, and the spread of ideas and ideologies. Globalization is not only ‘out there’, but it has implications for how we live and will live our lives and who we may become. It brings us new possibilities for learning. People often talk about this new world as the knowledge society. But globalization creates new problems as well. The Internet Revolution has also led to digital divides for those without access to the ‘information highway’. Poverty and wealth have increased, as well as segregation, and middle class lifestyles are threatened. The US and its cities rely on immigrants’
