History 1301 August 11, 2010 Was Reconstruction a success or a failure? Defend your response Before even discussing the topic one needs to analyze reconstruction. We need to keep in mind that reconstruction was not just plainly building structures again (which was not until later), but rather reconstruction was more of building the United States society and economy again. It was a great challenge, since all of a sudden civil war victory of the northerner union had left 400 million of freedmen ( Ross Nazzal, Reconstruction I ). To my level of understanding Reconstruction which lasted 12 years in total ( Ross Nazzal, Reconstruction I ) was an absolute and miserable failure since the idea of freedom was long before not supported. “For this "fair land of Freedom "I do not care a damn” (Randolph, 1). After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson comes in office who was a southern racist (Berkin134). It turned out that congress was a republican and tried couple of attempts to impeach him ( Ross Nazzal, Reconstruction I) . The process of dispute between both eventually slowed down the process of Reconstruction as well. Frankly Republicans did but little for the reconstructions over all since they were
