Affecting Change 2 Affecting Change Paper Smith and Falmouth (S&F) is a “tele-shopping and mail order network” that operates in North America (University of Phoenix, 2007, p. 1). S&F recently started an e-tailing division named S&F online in which Irene Seagraves, CEO, employed a small team of managers, web developers, and logistic personnel. Seagraves hired Fred Johnson as Chief Operating Officer, COO, to analyze and restructure operations and to increase revenue by extending current business channels. Johnson has less than a year to incorporate a new strategy in the S&F Online organization (University of Phoenix, 2007). His methods must identify and modify the current culture while ensuring ethical standards are followed and maintained. Johnson immediately realizes the new position as COO is not welcomed by most of the employees in S&F Online. The team feels that the change in the organization’s structure and the formal authority that the new COO position encompasses has not been earned by Johnson. Robbins and Judge states “an organization’s structure is a means to help management achieve its objectives. The organizational structure refers to system of shared meaning held by members that distinguishes the organization from other organizations” (2007, p. 13). S&F Online has a centralized organizational culture and the project manager is the informal leader over these departments. S&F has two departments, a web development and a logistic team, and three managers in which the teams reports specific information. Argyle, project manager, works closely with the web development team and their online activities. Brian Kervor, the logistic manager, works with his small logistic team who deals with customer support and delivery. The logistic team works with Adam Searle, the marketing manager. This team “coordinates product lines, marketing
