Fight or flight kicks in (short term stress response) Stressful stimuli cause the hypothalamus to activate the adrenal medulla via NERVE IMPULSES (splanchnic nerve) o Medulla secretes catecholamines Ex: epinephrine (adrenalin) and/or norepinephrine (noradrenalin) Dr. Berg needs Energy o Increase glucose concentration by stimulating glycogen breakdown (in liver) Glucagon responsible for increasing glucose in bloodstream o Increase oxygen delivery to muscles Increase blood pressure, heart rate, and systolic volume o Increase metabolic rate o Change in blood flow pattern Ex. Epinephrine: alpha intestines, digestive tract, excretory system, reproductive system vasoconstriction less blood flow Beta muscles, heart, brain Vasodilation more blood flow Iodine required for proper thyroid function o Too little iodine
