Lecture #23 Reproduction I I) a. Spermatogensis: produces haploid sperm (n=1) from diploid germ cells via meiosis (normal division = mitosis diploid daughter cells i.e all somatic cells) b. Oogensis: produce haploid egg cells from diploid female germ cells (with loss of polar bodies) consult ch. 13 on mitosis II) Hormone Regulation of Vertebrate Reproduction a. Purpose i. Synchronize arrival of egg to sperm iii. Coordinate mating b. Cast of Character i. Estrogen (steroid) 1. Male: found in Adrenal cortex 2. Female: increase secondary sex characteristic; prepares uterus for pregnancy @ follicle cells (ovaries) ii. Progesterone (steroid) 1. Male: a little not much is found 2. Female: Prepare the uterus for pregnancy & maintains pregnancy @ Follicle cells (ovaries) iii. Testosterone (steroid) 1. Male: increase 2 nd sex characteristics; male sperm @ leydig cells of testies
