Lecture #24 Reproduction II I) Hormone Control of Female reproductive cycle a. Puberty: Hypothalamus escapes from inhibition by low levels of sex hormones increase of GnRH which anterior pituitary release LH & FSH ovaries make estrogen & progesterone (increase 2 nd b. Ovarian Cycle: Hormone Regulation (~28 day cycle in humans) i. ii. GnRH FSH Follicle cell development (in ovaries) estrogen release 1. Negative feedback in Anterior pituitary decrease FSH 2. Build up of GnRH 3. Build up of uterine lining (prepare for embedding zygote) 1. LH surge triggers ovulation (release of egg) & converts ruptured follicle c. Fertilization Period i. Oocyte viability ~1-2days ii. Sperm viability < 3 days iii. Susceptibility period < 5 days/cycle Progesterone: 1) Prepare uterine lining for implantation of embryo
