How to make verbs agree with their subjects What are verbs and subjects? Verbs are action words - e.g. eat, sleep, talk, walk, do, buy are all verbs Subjects are the person or thing who are doing the action of the verb - e.g. I eat; The dog sleeps; George talks a lot; They walk to work. What is verb-subject agreement? The verb form can change depending on whether the subject is singular or plural. e.g. The car park (singular subject) was (verb) full. The car parks (plural subject) were (verb) full. In these sentences each of the verbs agrees with its subject. The verb must always agree with its subject in number & person. That, of course, is the basic principle of subject-verb agreement . It's a simple enough rule, but on certain occasions even experienced writers can slip up on it. Often the verb is made to agree in number with a noun near it in stead of with its proper subject. To avoid this, we need to remember some simple rules. 1. Sometimes it's difficult to work out the subject, because there are lots of words between the subject and the verb e.g . The children , excited about Christmas presents, went to bed early without complaining. In such cases we have to remember that the subject is not always the noun closest to the verb. It is the noun (or pronoun ) that names what the sentence is about, and it may be separated by several words from the verb . So to make sure that a verb agrees with its subject and not with a word in the phrase or clause, we need to mentally cross out the interrupting group of words:
