Francesca Mainiero MUS 106 Section 1 Extra Credit: Chapter 5 1. In what ways were the gangster controlled Harlem nightclubs different than the Harlem dance halls? The gangster controlled Harlem nightclubs were highly associated with illegal activities, including the distribution of illegal alcohol. The prices for these nightclubs were extremely expensive, mostly in attempt to keep blacks out of these primarily white establishments. Harlem dance halls, however, were much more affordable to enter. The dance halls were primarily for dancing and socializing, not for attaining illegal alcohol. Also, blacks made up a majority of the dancing crowd, however whites were welcome as well. 2. Why and in what ways was the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra so important to the development of the jazz big band? The Fletcher Henderson Orchestra played a very important role in the development of jazz big bands in many ways. For instance, the use of sectionalization to divide the band into brass and reed instrument sections. Also the incorporation of ensemble swing techniques and block chord writing, which worked to thicken the melody. Also, the extensive use of improvised solos.
