Francesca Mainiero MUS 106 Section 1 Extra Credit: Chapter 6 1. Describe the ways in which swing music and popular culture were interrelated during the time known as the swing era. Swing music’s upbeat rhythm was perfect to dance to and the culture of the swing era was highly interested in clubs and nightlife that involved dancing. 2. Describe John Hammond’s role in the swing era and why he was important. Goodman was known for managing skills and helping artists record their records. He assisted in recording Goodman’s first record and then helped to put together Goodman’s famous orchestra. John Hammond went on to assist numerous big name jazz performers in their management and recordings. 3. Name some of the specific innovations Duke Ellington brought to jazz in the 1930s and 1940s. Duke Ellington became one of jazz’s first composers, writing over 2000 jazz songs. He was also known for his distinctive composition styles (jungle, concertos, impressionistic, and popular tunes).
