How to Document Sources in a Paper In order to avoid a charge of plagiarism (which carries severe penalties, ranging from being failed in a course to being expelled from the university), it is important that you acknowledge all sources that you quote, paraphrase from, or use ideas from in your paper. I. Kinds of information that require documentation: Quotations Paraphrases Opinions, ideas, theories, or claims of others Facts that are not widely known or are not available from numerous sources II. The correct way to quote: 1. Quote only what is needed to support your point. Do not overquote . 2. Quote exactly . That is, your quote should accord word-for-word with the original source. If you must leave part of a sentence out, insert an ellipsis: . . . If you must change or add a word, place the change or addition inside brackets: [ ] 3. Always introduce a quote or provide a context for it or integrate it coherently into your sentence. Don’t just insert a quote without any commentary on it or without clearly and coherently linking it to the point you are making. Examples: Awkward insertion of quote (no context provided) : A lot of teenagers join Facebook to be popular. “Being ‘friends’ on Facebook is more of a
