Nutrition 10 - Carbohydrates Anna Miller, MS, RD 1 Nutrition 10 The Sugars Natural Simple CHO s s Fruit, some veggies & some dairy products s Comes with nutrients, fiber and phytochemicals s Harder to overeat Refined Simple CHO (Added, concentrated sugar) s Mostly sucrose and HFCS s “Empty Calories” s Many names/forms s Easier to overeat Nutrition 10 High Fructose Corn Syrup What IS it? s A mixture of fructose and glucose; similar to sucrose! s Inexpensive form of sugar; used in the food industry Why is it so “bad”? s Americans are eating too much sugar; it’s often in the form of HFCS s Research does not support the idea that it is worse than sucrose.
