-How is deception related to persuasion? Is this ethical? Deception has persuasive ends to change beliefs, by means of deliberate distortion of the message. We aren’t good at picking up on deception. Strategies: Distortion: distort the message to better serve your goal. Omission: leave something out. Falsifications: make shit up -Two main models of deception Four factor model: Arousal, Control, Negative Emotion, Cognitive effort ----sending capacity hypothesis: liars tend to control what conveys the most messages and therefore lose control of those that convey the least, feet, hands.---- Interpersonal Deception Theory: Liars use strategic movements and messages to lie, but leakage happens and can give them away, blinks, nervousness. -Good v. bad liars and detecting deception Good liars have Machiavellian tendencies, don’t care, high self-monitoring behavior, high social skill, guys are better liars, motivation to lie. --Things to mess up or help picking up on deception—
