Speech II: Speech of Praise Name: Alexandra X Date: 7/19/10 I. Introduction A. Attention-Gaining Strategy: A common story about optimism begins, “One day a man was walking along a beach… and in the distance he saw a young boy picking up starfish [from the sand] and one by one throwing them back into the sea. As he came up to the boy he said, "You must be crazy! There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can't possibly make a difference." – Bridge of Christian Relief website. Until I met Dr. Neil Potter, a small animal veterinarian in Scotland, I was like the older man in the story, thinking that small animal veterinary medicine was futile and boring. I could not see myself working in a small animal practice, vaccinating dogs and treating the same conditions daily for years. B. Preview of Main Points: Through his passion for veterinary medicine and his intellectual curiosity, Dr. Potter showed me that small animal medicine can be a way to make a difference in the world. Transition: Dr. Potter has an attitude toward veterinary medicine that I find inspiring. II. Body A. First Main Point: Dr. Potter’s passion for small animal veterinary medicine springs from his love for each animal he treats. 1. Sub-point: Dr. Potter’s technician, Mindy, once told me, “One of Neil’s greatest strengths as a veterinarian is his ability to see each animal as unique.”
