CVEG 2014 8 Nov 2010 PROBLEM SET #9 (50 points) Problem Set #11 is due at the beginning of Lesson 36 (17Nov 2010). 1. (10 Points) Torsion. The pump (on left) depicted in the figure below is powered by an electric motor (on right) that has a power consumption of 850 watts when the pump is turning at 1500 revolutions /min. Determine the maximum shear stress in the transmission shaft (point A). If the shaft is made of SAE 4340 heat treated steel and is 40 mm in diameter, determine if the transmission shaft will satisfy a factor of safety of 3.0 with respect to ultimate shear stress? 1

2. ( 20 Points ) Torsion. A new helicopter is under development and you have been asked – because of your reputation as a CVEG 2014 “Designer” – to design the rotor mast (see Figure 1). The 600 hp engine in this developmental craft delivers 25,900 ft · lb of torque to the mast when the blades are rotating at 1200 rev/min. Design Considerations: Mast length = 2’ Mast diameter can not exceed 6” Maximum allowable angle of twist is 0.05 radians (vibration concerns)
