Karlo Natonton Chemistry Lab 153-45 TA: Jessica October 8, 2009 Reaction 1 To be performed under the hood. Place pieces of copper metal into a 15cm test tube. Add drops of 6M nitric acid, HNO 3 . Liquid in test tube will be blue-green as copper is consumed. Red-brown gas will be evolved. Copper (II) Nitrate is formed along with nitrogen dioxide gas, NO 2 . Vent NO 2 in the hood. Reaction 2 Place pieces of copper metal into a 15cm test tube. Add 2mL (40 drops) of 0.1M silver nitrate, AgNO 3 . Set test tube aside. Record changes, if any. Complete and balance the equation. Place the reaction in proper class. Reaction 3 Add a piece of mossy zinc to 5mL of 6M HCl in a 15cm test tube. Place thumb over the mouth of test tube until you feel pressure developing inside the tube. Hold mouth of test tube near flame and release your thumb. Record observations and supply requested info.
