Identifications Social Darwinism- refers to various ideologies based on the concept that competition on all individuals, groups, nations, or ideas drives social evolution in human societies. Eugenics- study of race Herbert Spencer- He applied Darwin’s theories to the physical world, biological organisms, the human mind, and human culture and societies. Arthur de Gobineau- He developed the racialist theory of Aryan master race. Friedrich Nietzche Imperialism- Extending the rule or influence of a country over other countries or colonies. National Selection also known as survival of the fittest Cuban Missile Crisis- standoff of several weeks between the U.S. and Soviets. Eastern Bloc- used to refer to the former Communist states of Eastern and Central Europe. NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization, system of collective defense where by its member states agreed to mutual offense from attacks by an external parties. Hawley Smoot Tariff Act- It raised U.S. tariffs on numerous imported goods to increase domestic firms market share. Cordell Hull- the underlying force and architect in the creation of the United Nations. Molotov- principle Soviet signee of the Nazi-Soviet nonaggression pact of 1939 Berlin Blockade- the Soviet Union blocked the Western force's railway and road access to the western sectors of Berlin that they had been controlling. Their aim was to force the western powers to allow the Soviet controlled regions to start supplying Berlin with food and fuel, thereby giving them nominal control over the entire city. Gorbachev- Gorbachev's attempts at reform as well as summit conferences with United States President Ronald Reagan contributed to the end of the Cold War, ended the political supremacy of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
