Nervous System Module 4 History of the Mind/Brain • • The mind is a function of the brain • Gall developed Phrenology (feeling somebody’s head to figure out their personality) Neurons (billions of neurons in our brain) • Cell body- the cell’s life-support center • Dendrites- receive messages from other cells • Axon- passes messages away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles, or glands) • Neural Impulse- electrical signal traveling down the axon • Myelin sheath- covers the axon of some neurons and helps speed neural impulses • Terminal branches of axon- form junctions with other cells (synaptic gap) • Multiple scoliosis is when the myelin sheath start to dissipate, that’s why movements are slower. • Action Potential- when something is going in or out • When the positive ions come in and negative ions come out, it triggers the next gate to open then the positive ions come in and negative ions come and the gate
