A) Term coined by French observers in the 19 th century who were looking at England’s changes and progress B) Characteristics: 1) Continuous increase in economic growth and technological change 2) Continued population explosion 3) Change in the nature of work 4) New social structure and new values II) Chronology of Industrialization A) Why England First? 1) French give name for Industrial Revolution (a) They see same things happening to England economically they happened to them politically 2) Economic advantages (English Advantages) (a) First agricultural revolution, most social mobility together produce wealth and incentives for change i. more land under cultivation, fewer people working on it, much more production (b) There are lots of markets in other areas across water (c) Large amounts of water transportation i. not only in oceans but in the rivers in the English main ii. it is very cheap to move things in the rivers
