October 6, 2010 DEATH PENALTY Missourians Against the Death Penalty TJ Parsons lives at Karen House Undergraduate degree at SLU Ended by Supreme Court in 1972 and allowed again in 1976 1227 executions since 1976 Missouri is in the top 5 executing states: Texas, Virginia, Oklahoma, Florida, and Missouri 138 death row exonerations – proven innocent 35 states have death penalty statues Harris County, TX St. Louis County – 60% of death penalty sentences 52 men on death row with a death sentence Missouri allows broad prosecutorial discretion (arbitrarily applied) St. Louis City – less likely to get a death penalty than in St. Louis County COST – wasting taxpayer dollars, how we spend our money is an extension of our values, cost of the death penalty system, tough on crime vs. smart on crime, effects on murder victim family members Florida – cost differential is $51 million each year New York - $170 million over 9 years and no executions New Jersey - $253 million – 25 year no executions
