Introduction 1. Why would sociology be referred to as a young and difficult science? a. Young because only recently have people had the data necessary to put social theories to the scientific test. b. Difficult because the subjects of sociological research (i.e. people) are self aware. 2. How does Stark define sociology? a. “The scientific study of the patterns and process of human social relations.” 3. What are some moral statistics, groups, or social facts about suicide? a. More men commit suicide than women b. More whites commit suicide than blacks 4. What is a sociological approach to suicide? a. The propensity of people to commit suicide varies systematically (and substantially) based on their membership in social groups. 5. What is a sociological question that one might ask about suicide? a. Why do people commit suicide? 6. What’s the difference between psychology and sociology? a. Psychology deals with the study of the brain and how it affects the way one behaves, while in sociology you study groups of people and the way they are affected by outside sources. Sociocultural Systems I: Microstructure 1. What is an example of diffusion, innovation, and social change? a. The diffusion of seed cord in Iowa. 2. How do trends in fashion happen? a. Trends move from the innovators (people who start them), to early adapters, early majority, late majority, and then laggards. 1
