MEST M200: 4 September 2008 Contexts or Applications We identify ourselves within a certain context Ex: Church, School, City Hall, Institutions Institutions give us laws and rules We have to follow these laws and rules to identify ourselves Where do these laws and rules come from? What are the origins of these laws? Why do they change? (transition?) Pledge a kind of fidelity ( feudal relationship)- you pledge fidelity to someone by paying for it (Med. Times- used crops or goods) What about tradition ? “It is tradition that…” Only when tradition is completely broken, do we accept, as human beings, change How does the institute change the rules to accommodate new power structures Hegemony- the ruling group requires some degree of consent from the subordinate group (Wikipedia) x: family, town, religious, government, etc. _____________ Armando Petrucci- wrote The Illusion of Authentic History- Documentary Evidence Of fundamental importance to historians- proved that historical medieval documents don’t tell us history Also explains what we do find in historical evidence- Documents tell us about: - Relationships and the hierarchy of those relationships
