M200- 2 September 2008 Introduction What is “history”? What is “identity”? Difficult Questions Where does history start? Where do you have to look to find it? Italy loses its king in 1947- had a king until then Royalty was only let back into the country in 2006 (Savoia family) What was Italy before the “state” of Italy (1861)? Early Middle Ages- Roman empire/Republic/Senate Rome known as “urbs” or “The City” By the 5 th century, the Senate was a conglomerate of powerful families. No longer the Senate of the Roman Empire. Became the ruling family of Rome, the army, and the state __________ Family Medeival Italy and Modern Italian society- major identifying structure of society Identity - How do you identify yourself? Name Parents- especially fathers or famous members of family Place where you’re from (focused on cities, not modern nations) Geography- city, country, rivers, mills, mountains, etc. Language- not really an identifying trait
