I. Project Management a. Definition i. Project 1. A series of jobs usually directed towards some major output and requiring a significant period of time to perform b. Organizational Structures i. Pure Projects → External 1. Advantages a. Project manager authority b. One boss c. Shortened lines of communication d. Pride, motivation, commitment are high 2. Disadvantages a. Duplication of Resources i. Ex: B-school grad building contractor employed had people on payroll that could do the jobs that the subcontractors were hired to do subcontractors → IU already b. Organizational goals are secondary i. Ex: when trying to complete grad building – ripped out undergrad AC and forgot to replace it c. Weakened functional divisions d. No-home – “life after project?” ii. Functional Projects → Internal (an additional job added to a traditional job) 1. Advantages a. Team member can work on several projects b. Technical expertise remains
