Helminths Domain Eukarya Kingdom Animalia Two Phyla: Platyhelminthes (flatworms) Nematoda (roundworms) Each phylum has some free-living species and some parasites They are large and multicellular, but some parts of the life cycle are microscopic Body Trends of Parasites Simple or reduced digestive system Reduced nervous system and locomotion Complicated and prolific reproductive system Helminth Life Cycles May have several larval stages in intermediate hosts The host of the adult stage is definitive Dioecious means two separate genders Monoecious means male and female in one body, or hermaphroditic Miracidium is first larval form Cercariae are later larval forms Flatworms Trematodes (Flukes) Lung fluke, Blood fluke, Asian liver fluke Cestodes (Tapeworms) Beef tapeworm, Pork tapeworm, Fish tapeworm Flukes Attach to host with suckers Monoecious (contain testes and ovaries) Lung Fluke Paragonimus westermani Adult lives in bronchioles of humans and other mammals Eggs are swallowed and excreted
