Animism-Another term for traditional ethnic religions Example: Animists believe that inanimate objects like plants and stones are “animated” Autonomous Religion-A type of universalizing religion that is self-sufficient Example: Islam and some Protestant denominations are Autonomous Branch-A large and fundamental division within a religion Example: Roman Catholic, Protestant and Eastern Orthodox are the 3 main Branches of Christianity Caste-The class or distinct hereditary order into which a Hindu was assigned according to religious law Example: The “Untouchables” were the lowest class in the Caste system Cosmogony-A set of religious beliefs concerning the origin of the universe Example: This concept is the differentiation between ethnic and universalizing religions Denomination-A division of a branch that unites a number of local congregations in a single legal and administrative body Example: Methodist, Pentecostal and Lutheran are denominations of Protestantism
