Universalizing Religions: 3 main are Christianity, Islam and Buddhism BRANCH: large and fundamental division within a religion DENOMINATION: a division of a branch that unites a number of local congregations in a single legal and administrative body SECT: a relatively small group that has broken away from an established denomination CHRISTIANITY: Has more than 2 billion adherents More than any other religion and has the most widespread distribution Predominant religion in north America, south America, Europe, and Australia/Africa and asia 1. BRANCHES OF CHRISTIANITY: 3 main branches: Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox Roman Catholics-52% of the worlds Christians, Protestants-21%, Eastern Orthodox-10% 22% of Christians belong to churches that dont affiliate themselves with these 3 branches and 5% of Christians dont belong to any church Within Europe: Roman Catholicism is the dominant Christian branch in the southwest and East, protestant in the northwest and orthodox in the east and SE Roman catholic and protestant have sharp boundaries Eastern orthodox branch is made up of 14 self governing churches in eastern Europe and the middle east More than 40% belong to the Russian orthodox church Christianity came to Russia in the 10 th century and the church was established in the 16 th Nine of the other 13 churches were established in the 19 th or 20 th centuries 2. CHRISTIANITY IN THE WESTERN HEMISHPERE: Nearly 90% of people on the western hemisphere are Christian About 5% belong to other religions and the rest dont belong to a religion 93% of latin American Christians are roman catholic, compare to 29% of people in north America Within north America, catholics are clustered in southwestern and northeastern US and Canada province of Quebec Protestant churches have about 83 million members or 28% of the population in the US Baptist churches have the largest number of adherents in the US about 35 million combined 3 largest protestant denominations: Methodist, pentecoastal, Lutheran Baptists are clustered in the SW Lutherans in the upper Midwest ISLAM: 1.3 billion people Predominant in middle east, north Africa to central asia of the muslims live in Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and india Muslim is an adherent to islam 1. BRANCHES OF ISLAM: Sunni and Shiite Sunnis comprise 83% of muslims and are the largest branch in most muslim countries 16% Shiites-nearly 30% of Shiites live in Iran, 15% in Pakistan, 10% in Iraq Nearly 90% of the population In iran are Shiites and more than half in Azerbaijan, Iraq and oman and Bahrain 2.
