Chapter 10: Stereotype, Prejudice, and Discrimination Stereotypes- belief that associate a whole group of people with certain traits. We have a stereotype for what type of person drives a BMW Prejudice - hostile or negative feelings about people based on their membership in a certain group. Discrimination - behaviour directed against persons because of their membership in a particular group. Social Psychological Factors that Contribute to Stereotyping and Prejudice Research psychology suggests that we may engage in negative behaviour toward others when we feel badly about ourselves Steve Fein and Steve Spencer (1997) designed a study to examine whether people whose self-esteem is threatened are more likely to use stereotypes. Participants were given either positive or negative feedback about their intelligence. Participants with negative feedback rated a woman of Jewish descent’s personality to be more negative (at this school there was a strong negative stereotype about Jewish American women) Social learning one explanation for why people are often willing to express certain types of prejudice and not others. Social learning is one explanation for why people are more willing to express types of prejudice and not others Social Categorization Social categorization - the tendency for individuals to classify people into groups on the basis of common attributes. In-group – people like us. Out-groups-people not like us Two consequences that contribute to stereotyping 1) Out-group homogeneity effect - people’s tendency to underestimate the variability of out- group members compared to the variability of in-group members. People’s general tendency to see out-group members as very similar to one another, while seeing members of our in-group as more diverse. This occurs because we typically have less exposure to and familiarity with people in the out-group than those in our in-group 2) In-group favouritism - the tendency to discriminate in favour of those in your in-group versus your out-group. Factors that contribute to this are self-interest: we are motivated to favour those in our in-group because those people are more likely to favour us in return. Another is social dominance orientation: a personality variable describing the extent to which one wants his or her in-group to dominate and be superior to out-groups Scoring- sum up your total number of points on all the items being scaled. Realistic Group Conflict Theory Realistic group conflict theory - the theory that competition between groups for resources leads to conflict
