Kimberly Hargraves 2-26-11 Hum 211 Laius was Oedipus real father. When he was younger he raped the King Pelop’s son Chrysippus . Laius married Jocasta. The message or oracle that Delphi the prophet of the god Apollo delivered to Laius and the queen was that he must not have a child with his wife, or the child would kill him and marry her. The queen and king made an attempt to avert the fate of the gods by Laius's orders the baby, Oedipus, was exposed on Mount Cithaeron with his feet bound or perhaps staked to the ground. Oedipus gets into a fight with Laius or the old man and kills him. The Sphinx is the monster that is controlling Thebes. " What is the creature that walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three in the evening? " is the riddle the Sphinx asked and Oedipus solved it by replying "Man" (who crawls on all fours as an infant, walks upright later, and needs a walking stick in old age).
