The Determination of Chloride by titration  with an Absorption Indicator                                                           Joel I. Eldridge Abstract The focal point of the experiment is determining the presence of chloride in a  solution.  The method used to carry out the experiment is  titration. Titration is a process by which the concentration of an unknown substance in a solution is determined by adding measured amounts of a standard solution that reacts with the unknown.

Introduction In a laboratory setting, oftentimes an unknown is given.  Once the unknown is  given it is then the scientist’s responsibility to determine the identity of the  unknown or its molecular mass.  The focal point of the experiment is determining  the presence of chloride in a solution.  The method used to carry out the  experiment is  titration. T itration is a process by which the concentration of an unknown substance in a solution is determined by adding measured amounts of a standard solution that reacts with the unknown. This process results in determining the concentration of chloride the unknown is composed of while using stoichiometry of the reaction and the number of moles of the standard solution needed to determine the endpoint. Principle The titration reaction is:                   AgNO ( aq ) + NaCl ( aq )      AgCl ( s ) + NaNO ( aq )

Na +   and NO 3 - are spectator ions, which are ions that are not involved in the  reaction, therefore this reaction may be written more accurately as:                                        Ag +  + Cl -     AgCl( s ) As a result, the nitrate ions are only weakly adsorbed to the precipitate after the  equivalence point is reached, and they are easily displaced by indicator ion. The  end   point   is   signaled   by   the   appearance   of   the   pink   color   of   silver
