Final Project: A World Apart 2 The introduction into the fundamentals of corrections, and the contrast between the American correctional system and the Israeli correctional system is characterized by the numerous types of management, security levels, prison life, and various other aspects. The United States is a federal constitutional republic, in which the President, Congress, and judiciary share authority, and command. The United States prison system operates under strict authority of both the Federal and State Governments. Incarceration is one of the main forms of punishment used in the United States for the commission of felony offenses in addition to minor offences as well. The Unites States correctional system and institutions include county, state, and federal prisons. The federal government, states, counties and various individual cities use these facilities to confine people that commit crimes, awaiting trail, or being held until pending citations for non-custodial offenses. In contrast, the country of Israel has placed their countries into a far less complicated structure only consisting of 23 penal institutions, and eight detention center. The Israeli Prison Service is responsible for maintaining civilian prisons in Israel, in addition to security prisons holding Palestinian detainees. The type of system and the institutions leads into to the management aspect of these criminal systems; how they function, and what they need to progress in succession. The United States management of prisons duplicates the management style of the Israeli prison system in the sense that there is a ranking system among the officials, officers, and other workers in the prisons. Among the staff in the Israeli prison system the 2 nd Lieutenant is the lowest ranking officer, preceding is the 1 st Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier, Major General, and lastly the

Final Project: A World Apart 3 Lieutenant General is the commander of the prison service, and oversees all that is involved with the prisons. The United States prison system is significantly the same, but it has more correction officers at the lowest levels. The levels of officials, and the population of the inmates, are some of the reasons privatization is such an important topic. The role and purpose of privatization in any country, is to replace any government provided services with privatized enterprises. Although this method may be costly, it offers an abundance of superior programs and services. In recent years, there has been much debate over the privatization of prisons in America. Privatization offers flexibility, decrease in cost, and active employment in prisons for low pay. Unfortunately, the prison population in America dramatically affects the effectiveness that privatization
