Lecture 4 Other Theogony Other Theogonies Hesiod: systemized myths Iliad XIV 198-204 (Hera to Aphrodite) o Hera wants to seduce Zeus and lies to Aphrodite o Same succession myth as Hesiod’s (Ouranos – Kronos – Zeus) o Okeanos and Tethys are titans o Separation from water below from water above (Hesiod) – similar to genesis o Homer: hints that relationship stories and family trees have different versions – Hesiod’s is not definitive like the  Torah Similarities between Hesiod’s Greece and other Mediterranean stories o Hittites – from Turkey to Saria and Iraq (1800 BC – 1170BC) Civilization vanished – lost till 19 th  century Archaeologists discovered clay tablets – deciphered in 1915 Accounts, inventories, everything (historical narratives, stories, etc.) Kumabi – “Kingship in Heaven” – 13 th  century BC Similar to Hesiod’s theogonies
