Shang and Western Zhou (`1500-771 BCE) – The Chinese Bronze Age Shang Dynasty 1500-1045 BCE o First truly historical dynasty o Last capital excavated by archaeologists o Traditional story Founded by Cheng Tang, who defeated Xia King Pan Geng moved capital to Yin Last King (Zhou) was sadistic drunk Conquered by the king Wen of Zhou at battle of Muye, Ca. 1045 BCE o Nature and structure of Shang state King is one man who has access to gods – sole person No territorial – he was king, but delegated out authority Cemented alliances Controlled monarchy o Shang Oracle Plastron, 1200 BC Way of ascertaining will of the gods Understnd reasons of things 250,000 bones survived did not do anything without consulting oracles pyro, fire drill holes in back go into temple and take hot bronze poker in holes shape/sound of crack told answer to questions write answers on bones (1 st surviving writing) two sides to each question – charge o Chinese Divination King asked gods about rain, harvest, and battle
