Puerto Rican Americans, we originated in Puerto Rico an island that is rich in culture as well as land. The island was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and conquered for Spain in 1509 by Juan Ponce de Leon who gave the island its name. The Island became United States territory 1898 after the Spanish – American war. My name is Luz De Leon, my parents and many others migrated to the United States during the war. I was only four years old when we left. I can remember smelling the sweet ocean as we got on a boat leaving the only home I had ever known. My father went to war and my mother did odd jobs to support the family while he was away. I remember going to school and being picked on because I was not as white as the white people felt I should be. I was teased because of my strong accent. My mother had to move me from schools a lot; Although while I was in school all schools were segregated in the south. Finally we moved north from Texas to New York. I found friends that talked and looked just like me. My mother would always say
