Baxter 1 Marisa Baxter Dale Crandall-Bear History 003 February 17, 2019 I will be answering chapter 17b. “Compare the British and Chinese views of trade based on the documents by Adam Smith, Lord Macartney, and the Qianlong Emperor. How do the European and Chinese views reflect different political and economic outlooks?”. China had one port to trade out of to Britain and all of the other countries. China limited their trade to prevent relying on other countries for trade and to keep traders in a certain area so they did not stay in China. The Chinese made the traders keep their families and women at home so they would hurry out of China to see them again. China only wanted to trade and profit off of everyone else without having other people live in China. In Britain, They traded with everyone and they couldn't understand why China didn’t want them to stay. They convinced China to open up another port to trade. The british also offered gifts to the Chinese emperor, but he refused them. He
