FAST-TRACK ORGANIC CHEMISTRY CHEM 2423-2425 SYLLABUS SPRING 2009 SECTION 7200-7201 INSTRUCTOR Dr. Kay Kouadio Office: C-303C Office Hours: MWF: 9:05-10:00AM TR: 9:35-10:30 Tel: 972-273-3511 e-mail: [email protected] Class schedule: Lecture: TR 11:00 - 1:50 PM  Lab: TR: 7:00 – 10:50 PM           TR: 2:00 – 5:50 PM COURSE  INFORMATION Accelerated  CHEM 2423-2425 is a combo, fast track course that covers both CHEM 2423 and   CHEM 2425 courses in one semester. This course is designed  for highly motivated  students  who  are majoring in science or science-related  fields and  who have  already taken CHM 1411 and 1412  courses .   The first part of the course is an introduction  to the fundamental classes of organic compounds.   Indeed, hydrocarbons  and  their derivatives (alkenes alkynes, and  alkyl halides), alcohols, ethers,  and  thiols will be covered. Furthermore, isomerism  and  stereochemistry are also introduced.  Finally, the different types of organic reactions (addition, substitution, elimination, and  redox  reactions) and  nucleophilic substitution  and  elimination reactions mechanisms  (SN1, SN2, E1, and   E2) will be also explored.  CHEM 2425 is naturally for those students who have already  passed  CHEM 2423. In this course,  topics such as radical and  redox reactions, structure determination  (mass spectrometry, IR, NMR,  UV-Vis), conjugation and  Diels-Alder pericyclic reactions, benzene and  derivatives, nucleophilic  aromatic substitution  reactions, carboxylic acids and  their derivatives will be covered.  Furthermore, enols, enolates, esters, and  amines are also introduced.  Finally, if time permits, the  structures of life molecules will be explored. AUXILIARY MATERIAL:  A molecular model kit is recommended.   OBJECTIVES:  The goal of this course is to give you a basic understanding  of the complex  organic and  biological reactions that take place in biological systems. Either you plan to become  an MD or a pharmacist, the completion  of this course will help you understand  better the  different concepts and  facts that you will be exposed  to at your next program. This course will  help you to tackle Biochemistry with ease.
