H      H                 H C C H         1     2                                         H      H Staggered    Eclipsed Note: eclipsed and staggered = conformers   = stereomers   = stereoisomers The  energy cost  from  staggered to eclipsed  is  3.0 kcal/mol . This energy is due to  3 H-H eclipsing interactions (1.0 kcal each). Note: a H-H interaction occurs when two Hs are eclipsing each other on  neighboring carbon atoms. This kind of interaction is called “torsional  strain”. 2
