Topicalization:A demonstration of UG in ASL Topicalization is movement by to the left edge of the sentence, adjoining (attaching) to IP 1. Mary, John likes __. 2. ?Peter doesn’t [ VP believe [ CP that [ IP Mary, John likes __ ]]]. 3. *Peter doesn’t [ VP believe [ IP Mary, John likes __ ]]. Why is the third sentence so bad? 1. Clauses can be CPs (with complementizer that ) or IPs (without that ) 2. Topicalization is impossible to embedded IP unless that the IP is inside of a CP Topicalization is adjunction to IP (attachment to its left edge). Adjunction directly to a complement (embedded) clause is not allowed. Therefore, topicalization in a complement clause can only apply to move (adjoin) the topic to the left edge of IP if that IP is contained within a CP!!! ASL shows this Principle:Wh-Movement only out of IP Two classes of verbs:
