Extra legal factors Demeanor of the suspect Does the suspect act like an “asshole”? Will this increase or decrease chances of arrest? What if suspect was nice and respectful Victim-offender relationship Closest relationship= husband/wife, family member, close friend Somewhat close relationship=acquaintance No relationship=stranger Closer victim-offender relationship less likely to arrest why? Example: stranger rape vs. date rape and decision to arrest Example: Domestic violence Topic 14: Excessive use of force and deadly force
